हम उन सौभाग्यशालियों में नहीं जिन्हें स्कूल कालेज का कोई शिक्षक याद हो। फिर भी, गुरू तरु की जिस छाया का अहसास आज भी कायम है, वह डा. महादेव साहा की है, जिनके साथ ही पहली बार नेशनल लाइब्रेरी की सीढि़यां चढ़ा था और उसी परिसर में प्रो.सुनिति चाटुर्ज्या की कुटिया के रोमांच को महसूस किया था। डाक्टर साहब सुनिति बाबू के ऐसे सम्मानित मित्र थे, जिन्हें सुनिति बाबू ने अपनी एक पुस्तक भी समर्पित की थी। जानकार हलकों में सूचनाओं का अकूत खजाना, एक जीवित इनसाइक्लोपीडिया, तथ्यों को लेकर हर शंका का तत्काल समाधान। हमने उन्हें जीवन भर पोस्टकार्ड लिखते और उनके जरिये सूचनाओं का आदान-प्रदान करते हुए ही देखा।
आज उनकी याद खास तौर पर इसलिये आई क्योंकि प्रधानमंत्री ने विद्यार्थियों को अपने संबोधन का समापन ‘गूगल गुरू’ को याद करके किया और कहा कि वहां सिर्फ सूचना ही सूचना है, ज्ञान नहीं है।दरअसल, सूचना और ज्ञान के टंटे की यह कहानी बहुत पुरानी है। इससे अब सिवाय घिसे-पिटेपन के और कुछ भी प्रेषित नहीं होता। टी एस इलीयट की तो प्रसिद्ध पंक्तियां है : “Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?/Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?”
सभ्यताओं के इतिहास पर नजर डालें तो पता चलेगा कि जिन समाजों ने अपने इतिहास, अपने ज्ञान-विज्ञान की सूचनाओं को कायदे से सहेजने से परहेज किया, वे समाज क्रमश: ज्ञान और बुद्धि के सारे मानदंडों पर खोखले होते चले गये। हम भी सूचना-विहीन ज्ञान और ज्ञान-विहीन बुद्धि के खोखलेपन के शिकार हैं। आजादी के बाद इस कमी को दूर करने के लिये ही भारतीय सांख्यिकी संस्थान (आई एस आई) की तरह के सिर्फ सूचनाएं बंटोरने वाले राष्ट्रीय संस्थान का गठन किया गया। फिर भी, यह दंभ कैसा कि सूचना में क्या रखा है, ज्ञान भी किस काम का – आत्म-ज्ञान और आत्म-मनन ही यथेष्ट है!
इसीलिये हम तो ऐसे किसी मंतव्य का समर्थन नहीं कर सकते, जो ‘गूगल गुरू’ जैसे सूचनाओं के खजाने का उपहास करता हो। हमारे प्रधानमंत्री को तो आज के युग के वैश्वीकरण का प्रबल समर्थक माना जाता है। सारी दुनिया से ‘पूंजी’ को आमंत्रित करने की उनकी आतुर गुहारों का कोई अंत नहीं है। वे जब दुनिया की सूचनाओं और ज्ञान के स्रोतों का उपहास करते हैं तो यह कोरा पाखंड नहीं तो और क्या है ? दीगर कारणों से यदि ‘गूगल गुरू’ से कोई शिकायत हो तो इसका स्वदेशी विकल्प बनाओ, लेकिन इसकी उपादेयता से इंकार मत करो।
इसीलिये, हम तो हमारे डाक्टर महादेव साहा, चलते-फिरते इनसाइक्लोपीडिया को शिक्षक दिवस के इस मौके पर गहरी श्रद्धा से याद करते हैं।
