Indonesia has a population of 240 million people, of whom 4.6% suffer from some form of mental illness. However, the country has only 500 practising psychiatrists while the few mental health centres remain crowded with patients. I captured these images in the metropolitan area of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The patients appeared underfed; most of them were kept naked. The old, the young…all together. The latest patient was a 12-year-old.
