तभी बेटे की कुसंगत की वजह से बाबूजी एक जूआघर के संपर्क में आयें ओर चंद रोज के लिये उस जूआघर के मुलाजिम होगये। जूआघर की कमाई ने बेटी का ब्याह भले-भले निपटा दिया। फिर एक बार सारी जिम्मेदारियों से मुक्त बाबूजी ने जूआघर छोड़ा और 28 साल बाद पत्नी के साथ हिल स्टेशन की सैर पर गये।

न जाने कितनी छोटी-छोटी इच्छाओं, वासनाओं से बना है यह निम्नवित्त का जीवन, जैसे विशाल समंदर में उतार दी गयी कागज की कोई नौका। उठती-गिरती लहरों के साथ डोलती, हवा के थपेड़ों से उलट-पुलट होती और पता नहीं कब, अचानक ही किसी अतल गहराई में अपना अस्तित्व गंवा बैठती।
इस कमजोर जीवन में दहलीज के बाहर कदम रखना ही जैसे मृत्यु को निमंत्रण देना है! लेकिन बात बाबूजी के गिर कर मर जाने की नहीं है, बात उस ऊंचाई से छलांग लगा कर उड़ने की क्षणिक अनुभूतियों की है।
